NY Post: "Hip-Hop Flops"
Today's NY Post had a story about the demise of hip-hop brands. Here's a quote:
"The across-the-board slowdown is alarming some of the major department-store retailers that had allocated a growing amount of space to these brands on the belief that the double-digit sales growth of recent years would continue, sources said. Federated Department Stores, which operates the Macy's and Bloomingdale's chains, for instance, is seeing recent sales of urban brands decline in the double digits, compared with year-ago levels, said one person, who added: "It has everyone worried."
However, while it might make for a catchy headline, read the article and you'll see that it's not ALL hip-hop brands. High-end urban lines like Sean John, Marc Ecko and Rocawear's RyanKenny are still selling. Still, it's the preppy brands, including Lacoste, LeTigre (featured below in a photo from on line retailer Karmaloop.com) and Penguin that are likely to see the biggest sales increases going forward.
